Acupuncture treatment in Geelong

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most widely practised forms of medicine in the world. At Geelong Chinese Medicine, it’s central to how we work.

Every acupuncture treatment starts with a detailed case history, tongue and pulse assessment, and a conversation about what’s going on. From there we select acupuncture points based on your individual presentation, not a set protocol. We’re treating the pattern behind your symptoms, not just the symptoms themselves.

We use fine, single-use, sterile needles. Most people find the sensation minimal, and many fall asleep during treatment.

How acupuncture works

heading-art
A network

Think of your body as a city with a network of roads. When traffic flows freely, everything works. But when there’s a blockage — an injury, prolonged stress, illness — things back up. Pain, fatigue, poor digestion, disrupted sleep: these are your body’s version of a traffic jam.

In Chinese medicine, those roads are called meridians, and the traffic is your qi and blood. Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points along the meridian network to clear the blockage, restore flow, and help the body recover. It reduces inflammation, regulates the nervous system, and supports your body’s own repair processes.

This is also why two people with the same diagnosis can receive very different treatments. We’re not just treating the symptom — we’re treating the pattern behind it, and that pattern is different for everyone.

We often combine acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine for a stronger and more sustained result. How we combine them depends on what your body needs.

Other methods

Acupuncture includes a range of acupuncture methods from very gentle to strongly stimulating which are selected according to an individual’s needs and feedback.

We also use cupping, gua sha, and moxibustion to achieve therapeutic goals. These approaches are useful when we want to target specific conditions more precisely, or for patients who prefer a needle free option. See our Needle-Free Acupuncture page for more.

We frequently combine acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine, prescribing from our in-house herbal dispensary to extend the effect of treatment between visits.
